Cultural Heritage Research
The ambition of the cultural heritage research activities is the application of microscopic visualisation and analysation methods to investigate deterioration processes at cultural valuable monuments like buildings made of natural stone or bricks, half timbered houses and historical wall paintings.
During a great research program funded by the German ministry of research and science (BMBF) on the field of "stone deterioration/conservation" (1986-1998) several mobile laboratories on wheels with complete scanning electron microscopic equipment were developed.
Within the scope of this research program extensive investigations on-site of the monuments all over Germany were made. Even after end of this program we are involved by private and public customers to make special investigations. A summary of the most up to now investigated monumemts is given in the list of monuments and the map of monuments.
Additionally the MPA Bremen got the task on the main focus field of "historical wall paintings" to do co-ordination of the research activities at some valuable monuments. With this experience the MPA is nowadays able to offer scientific investigations and/or co-ordinate them.
After end of this German research program the MPA continues in engaging within other national and international resarch projects. Especially the participation in the "European network for application and developing diagnosis techniques and methods for the investigation and conservation of paintings" fundet by the European commission is to single out.
Topically the MPA is involved in a german-chinese reseach co-operation regarding "Investigations to preserve chinese polychrome artefacts of the Qin- and Han-era by means of electron microscopic, video holografic and selected microbiological and chemical methods", especially at the terra cotta army of soldiers and horses in Lintong (China).
Beneath this very practical orientated projects we are doing basic research, e.g. within a project about the "Behaviour of salts in pore spaces" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
